After 6 successful years of providing RSS feeds to products on Gumroad and thousands of customers, I’ve decided to throw in the towel.

Gumcast was conceived on a bike ride in Denmark when the Gumroad app kept crashing while trying to stream over cell data.

But I’m relying on it!

Super duper sorry—I just can’t justify spending any more time on the project.

Personally, the content I was watching on Gumroad has moved on to other platforms, and Gumroad itself has more than enough resources to add the features provided by Gumcast, so it’s time (probably overdue, tbh) to pull the plug.

Encourage the content creators you support on Gumroad to move to a platform that supports podcast feeds.

But my patrons are relying on it!

There are a bunch of places to host podcasts these days. Until Gumroad improves its podcasting features, I strongly suggest offering your show on platforms that actually support podcast subscriptions. Many of the most popular shows on Gumroad are now available on platforms like Substack, which have first-class podcasting support. Many shows are also available on YouTube again, as it comes back down to earth with a sane content moderation policy.

6 Years and no RSS?

Sahil offered to acquire Gumcast the other year but got cold feet. I assumed, with the excess resources available to the company, they decided they would just farm the feature out to a contractor or AI but this still hasn’t happened. Oh well!

An Uneventful Year

Basically nothing happened this year! Gumcast continues to operate as normally, and Gumroad hasn’t added any podcasting or RSS features to the core service, so we’ll keep the lights on for another year as operational costs remain low.

Most podcast clients don’t know what to do with hls stream playlists, but some sort of support it (Like apple podcasts). Ideally gumroad products support media content downloads for the best experience with gumcast. For those that don’t however, gumcast will at least get you to the stream URL.

If your podcast subscription suddenly stops working, or you see a warning message in your podcast feed, log back into Gumcast.com and grab a new RSS feed URL and re-subscribe to the new URL and unsubscribe from the disabled feed. You will lose playback state most likely. Please ensure that these feeds are not shared or added to globally available podcast directories. If you are not the subscription owner, please support your favorite creators and create your own Gumroad subscription and then create your personal RSS feed URL on gumcast.com. Podcast apps should update automatically feeds from gumcast-api.herokuapp.com to api.gumcast.com, however sometimes this process fails due to bad podcast client behavior.

If you experience issues with your feed no longer updating, you may need to log into gumcast and generate a new feed URL, unsubscribe from your old subscription in your podcast app and re-add the new URL. Apologies for the inconvenience. Old podcast feed URLs will work until November 28, 2022.
